Splitting the bill equally: four friends

Four friends have dinner and the bill comes to 87.40 €. They decide to leave a 10% tip. The tip is 8.74 €, the total is 96.14 € and the calculator shows 24.04 € per person.

Watch the rounding: 96.14 ÷ 4 = 24.035, which rounds to 24.04 euros. If all four pay 24.04 €, the total collected is 96.16 €, two cents more. The same happens with a 100 euro bill, a 10% tip and three people: 110 € in total, 36.67 € each, 110.01 € for all three.

In practice those cents do not matter, but if one person pays the whole bill by card and the others transfer money to them, it is easier to agree on a rounded amount so nobody has to chase cents.

If the bill is paid by card but you want to leave the tip in cash, take just the tip line from the calculator. In this example each friend leaves about 2.20 € on the table, since 8.74 ÷ 4 = 2.185, and the card payment stays at the original 87.40 €.

When everyone ordered different amounts

An equal split is simple, but not always fair. If one person had only soup and another had a main course with wine, it is fairer for each to pay their own order plus the same tip percentage.

With the same 87.40 € bill, the friends ordered 18.50 €, 31.20 €, 22.90 € and 14.80 € worth. With a 10% tip each pays:

That again adds up to 96.14 €, so the restaurant receives exactly the same amount while the cost follows what each person consumed. In the calculator you can get each share by entering that person's order as the bill and setting the number of people to 1.

What each percentage means on a 60 euro bill

The effect of the tip rate is easier to judge side by side. For a 60 € bill:

To work it out in your head, move the decimal point of the bill one place to the left, which gives 10%. Half of that is 5%, and the two together make 15%. For an 87.40 € bill, 10% is about 8.70 € and 5% about 4.40 €.

• 5%: tip 3 €, total 63 €
• 10%: tip 6 €, total 66 €
• 15%: tip 9 €, total 69 €

Rounding up instead of a percentage

Many people do not calculate a percentage at all and simply round up to a convenient figure. If the bill is 87.40 € and you pay 95 €, the tip is 7.60 €, which is 8.70% of the bill. Knowing this helps you see whether the round-up is modest or generous.

In a group it is often easier to think in a round amount per person. If four people each pay 25 € towards an 87.40 € bill, that is 100 € in total and a tip of 12.60 €. That comes to 14.42% of the bill, noticeably more than the round-up suggests at first glance.

To find the percentage, divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100: 7.60 ÷ 87.40 × 100 = 8.70%. On a small bill rounding can be a surprisingly large percentage: paying 5 euros for a 4.20 € coffee leaves 0.80 €, which is already 19%.

Tipping in Estonia and what to look out for

In Estonia tipping is voluntary and the customer decides how much. The calculator does not assume any fixed rate; it simply uses the percentage you enter. If the service did not meet your expectations, it is perfectly normal not to tip.

• Check the bill before adding a tip: some places may already include a service charge, and a tip on top would mean paying twice.
• Menu prices already include VAT, so take the percentage of the final bill without adjusting for tax.
• If you used a gift card or discount code, it is your call whether to tip on the discounted or the full price.
• The calculator rounds the number of people to a whole number, with a minimum of 1.
