Power, root and logarithm
Exponentiation multiplies the base by itself as many times as the exponent (a^b). A root is the inverse (the nth root = a^(1/n)). The logarithm log_b(a) is the power to which the base b must be raised to get a.
How it is calculated
Formula
power: aᵇ; root: the b-th root of a = a^(1/b); logarithm: log_b(a) = ln a ÷ ln b.
Example
2⁵ = 32; ⁵√32 = 2; log₂8 = 3.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a root?+
The b-th root of a is a^(1/b). A square root is the 1/2 power, a cube root the 1/3 power.
What is a logarithm?+
The logarithm log_b(a) is the power to which the base b must be raised to get a. It is computed as ln a ÷ ln b.
