What is body mass index?

Body mass index (BMI) is your weight (kg) divided by the square of your height (m²). A BMI below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5-24.9 normal, 25-29.9 overweight and 30 or more obese. BMI is an indicative measure and does not account for muscle mass or build.

How it is calculated

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Underweight < 18.5; normal 18.5-24.9; overweight 25-29.9; obese ≥ 30.

Example

70 kg, 175 cm → 70 ÷ 1.75² ≈ 22.9 (normal).
