Estonian parental benefit 2026: amount, duration, sharing

The parental benefit (vanemahüvitis) is one of Estonia's key family benefits: it replaces your previous income after a child is born. The ceiling changed in 2026, so the rules are worth a refresher. Here are all the key numbers and principles in one place.

Updated: 2026-07-08

How large is the benefit in 2026?

The benefit equals your average monthly income of the previous calendar year that was subject to social tax. If you averaged 2000 € per month, the benefit is also 2000 € per month. It is a gross amount - income tax is withheld.

The 2026 limits: a minimum of 886 € (if you had little or no income) and a ceiling of 3806.10 € per month. From 2026 the ceiling dropped from three times to twice the Estonian average wage.

Three parts: maternal, paternal and shareable

The benefit is split into three parts, 605 days in total.

  • Maternal benefit: 100 days, of which up to 70 can be taken before the estimated due date. Mother only.
  • Paternal benefit: 30 days, father only. Can be used starting 30 days before the due date.
  • Shareable benefit: 475 days that parents split freely until the child turns 3.

Flexibility: pausing and simultaneous use

The shareable part can be paused and resumed by calendar days - for example, work a few months and then continue the benefit. It is a major advantage many families never use.

For up to 60 days both parents can receive the benefit at the same time, which shortens the total period by the overlapping days.

Working while receiving the benefit

You may work. If your gross income stays below half the ceiling - below 1903.05 € per month in 2026 - the benefit is not reduced at all. Above that, it is reduced by half of the exceeding amount, but never below the minimum.

How and when to apply?

After the birth is registered, the Social Insurance Board makes a personal offer in its self-service portal: you see the pre-calculated amount and period and confirm in a couple of clicks. You can also apply yourself if you want a different split.
